How To Prevent Cancer With Coffee

The key to preventing cancer is good nutrition. There's a world of healthy cancer preventive foods and coffee is one of them. Let's see what makes coffee a good choice for preventing cancer.

Coffee and Cancer Prevention

Coffee is a good source of the B-vitamin riboflavin, and is also a concentrated source of antioxidants and phytochemicals.

Coffee also contains chlorogenic acid, an antioxidant compound that is the major phenol of the coffee bean. According to Journal Of Nutrition, chlorogenic acids are cinnamic acid derivatives with biological effects mostly related to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.

A food with an anti-inflammatory activity is a good thing. The National Cancer Institute says that over time, chronic inflammation can cause DNA damage and lead to cancer.

People with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn disease, have an increased risk of colon cancer.

Research has revealed that cafestol and kahweol are significant chemical constituents of the green coffee oil. Studies reveal their potential as antitumor and antioxidant agents.

The Journal of Biomedical Science reports that coffee has various biological functions such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic activities.

They state in their studies findings that cafestol and kahweol found in green coffee beans suppressed MPM or Malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Harvard Health Publishing published that researchers found that coffee drinking is associated with a lower risk of lethal prostate cancer among men.

Coffee drinking is suggested to reduce the risk of other cancers, such as endometrial (inner lining of the uterus), and estrogen-negative breast cancer.

The More You Know
Men who have 6 cups of coffee a day reduce their prostate cancer risk by 60% and women who consume at least 3 cups of coffee a day have a 19% decreased risk of developing endometrial cancer, which claims the lives of about 10,000 women in the USA each year.

It should be noted that the New England Journal Of Medicine says that there is a link between coffee and pancreatic cancer (studies from 1981). Though the American Cancer Society says that though older studies have suggested drinking coffee might increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, there are more recent studies that have not confirmed the link.

Cancer Causes & Control published by Springer Link reported that moderate to high coffee consumption was associated with significantly decreased risk for early events in tamoxifen-treated patients with breast cancer and modified hormone receptor status.

Liver Cancer: News Medical Life Sciences says that coffee drinkers have 41% less instance of liver cancer. A more recent study showed that 1-3 cups of coffee a day reduces risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma by 29%.

Skin Cancer: The journal, National Cancer Institute reported that caffeinated coffee drinkers were less likely to develop melanoma. The more coffee people consumed the less risk was observed.

Lung Cancer: When it comes to coffee, caffeine has always received bad reviews.
